These 2 photos pretty much sum up where I am right now. The weather has been great (of course some grey days).

The Oysters I gathered myself from literally thousands on rocks by one of the local beaches, I managed to harvest all these in 30 mins, then spent an hour shucking (de-shelling) them, with a knife and hammer, stabbing myself badly! With a bit of lemon drizzled on top, and some champagne it was well worth it.

Seafood.

What’s Left After I Die?

Here are some early edits from a project I have been working on over the last month. I am travelling over in New Zealand at the moment- visiting my father and his wife. Sadly, my step-mum’s father passed away in the Summer, he lived down in Wellington where we stayed over Christmas… Ken’s house, and ‘family home’ had just been put up for sale, and I felt obliged to document the house as it was… The last time it would exist in its current state… Furniture and possessions to be sold, given away or packed up to bring home.

I was really interested in the idea of what is left after someone dies… This has been a topic I’ve covered in other projects, and something that really interests me. I tried to capture objects that would have been used on a daily basis by Ken (pictured in hat)… everyday things that really have no sentimental value, but all together combine to tell the story of a resident no longer around… I started out taking these pictures because I knew what I saw would not exist when the house had been cleared in a few days time… Amazing that 50 years of living, family, possessions, clutter and memories can change so quickly. I think it might be really interesting to make this into a small book and give it to Karen and Christine- Ken’s too daughters (shown in old photo in the frame)

On a technical note, I’m not sure how the photos inside work with the outside shots… The outside photos are more suggestive of the negative space- the emptiness and the decay that has occured due to the lack of a (keen) gardener. I particularly like how the concrete on the ground in the shot inside the greenhouse looks like a freshly laid coffin, and ties into the concept nicely. The inside photos were taken in a fairly clinical documentary style, I might look at working on the colours of the outside shots to bring them closer visually to the inside photos- although I think this could prove difficult as the success of some of the interior shots lie in their muted tones and selective colour palette- not really achievable outside.

More to come…

Second lot from NZ.

The pig used to belong to a Doctor, and it lived inside, was house trained and weighed 120kgs, after her diet!

Hello,

Been a long time since I have been able to post, have been travelling around NZ a little bit over the christmas break. Great place, so many different landscapes, cultures and climates. Some places always hot while their nearest neighbours have glaciers and snow… Here are a few of my photos, these are mostly landscapes.

Here are the second lot from Singapore… These feel more “nighttime”. Most of thee were taken in Little India, people never seemed to sleep there, always buying vegetables at 3am, and always with a smile.

Notice how the shots of Little India are in stark contrast to the minimal staircase, taken in one of the huge malls.

I’m spending the next three months on the beautiful island of Waiheke, a 30 minute ferry journey from central Aukland, New Zealand… Summer is just getting started here and the island is home to numerous internationally known vineyards, so I’ve been enjoying lots of good wine and the beginnings of what promises to be a warm summer.

En route to NZ I spent a few days in Singapore, most of my time was spent (as always in interesting foreign cities) wandering around with my camera and stopping occasionally for food and drinks. The city itself was pretty bland, lots of shopping malls and western style urban landscapes. I was fortunate enough to be staying in Little India, that and China-town were much more vibrant, people were friendly and the environment was visually and culturally interesting. I particularly like the old man getting a haircut on the street- he was happy having his photograph taken. Also the interesting looking man sat under the umbrella- He was some kind of psychic, telling people’s fortunes at the busy weekend market.

Here are the first set of my street photos, this set feel more “daytime” than my others, so I’ve grouped them like this simply as an easy way to separate them into 2 posts.

Here are some of the shots from my recent short session with Adrian Sherwood. I met up with Adrian at Fabric before he played alongside one of my favourite current producers Scuba.

Read the Hyponik article here or a short bio:

Adrian Sherwood (born 1958 in London) is an English record producer best known for his work with dub music as well as for remixing a number of popular acts such as Coldcut, Depeche Mode, The Woodentops, Primal Scream, Pop Will Eat Itself, Sinéad O’Connor, and Skinny Puppy.
He is co-founder of Carib Gems and Pressure Sounds, and founder of Hitrun Records as well as Green Tea Records and Soundboy Records. His most well-known label is On-U Sound.

During the early 80’s he brought together many Jamaican artists under the collective name of Singers & Players including Prince Far I, Mikey Dread, Bim Sherman and many others, this helped promote the individual artists at the same time as promoting the On-U Sound label.

In 1986 he began working Jamaican dub producer and singer Lee Perry. They produced the classic album ‘Time Boom X De Devil Dead’ and Sherwood’s support helped relaunch Perry’s career.

He made contributions to the Industrial music genre in his remix of Einstürzende Neubauten’s song ‘Yü Gung’, on the album ‘Halber Mensch’, as well as his production work with Ministry, Cabaret Voltaire, KMFDM, Terminal Power Company and Nine Inch Nails.

Here’s the last of my holiday photos, finally finished off the film and got it developed. Not had that much time to shoot much lately, although do have some projects in the pipes and some bits I’ve shot and not yet blogged.

Here’s some info about the album:

“We don’t know where we’re going but we sure make a lot of noise getting there!” - so goes the tongue-in-cheek opening to Rapping With Paul White, the gifted South Londoner’s first full-length vocal project. It’s another left turn after last year’s intriguing Paul White & The Purple Brain excursion into prog and psych-rock and deserves to establish its mastermind as one of the most versatile and individual producers working today.

Stones Throw artist Guilty Simpson appears twice, his grim warnings perfectly matching the sparse, brooding production on lead single Trust. Gap-toothed, mohawked Danny Brown is one of rap’s rising stars – a recent signing to A-Trak’s Fool’s Gold label, his lewd punchlines top White’s exuberant production on the not-safe-for-work One Of Life’s Pleasures. There’s humour in New Yorker Homeboy Sandman’s turn too, as one of hip-hop’s most likeable lyricists recounts his cultural missteps during a trip to London over a quintessential Paul White track.

It’s not all Americans on the mic: Jehst shows why he’s one of the UK’s most respected MCs on Indigo Glow, and One-Handed Music label mate Tranqill lays waste to Rotten Apples in the album’s grittiest moment. And how may hip-hop records feature a folk singer from Wigan, Nancy Elizabeth, laughing her way through a bizarre Edward Lear poem? There’s plenty for fans of Paul’s instrumental work too: from waltzing drum machines to medieval vocoders, the interludes are as compelling as the vocal tracks.
